Madurai to Chennai Road Route & Highway Conditions
| Journey section | Main highways | Key places along the corridor |
|---|---|---|
| Madurai to Thuvarankurichi | NH 785 — the Madurai–Natham road | Natham |
| Thuvarankurichi to Trichy | NH 38 — the Trichy–Madurai highway | Viralimalai |
| Trichy to Tindivanam | NH 38 and NH 132, the Chennai–Trichy highway | Samayapuram, Perambalur, Ulundurpet and Villupuram |
| Tindivanam to Chennai | NH 179B — GST Road (the old NH 45) | Chengalpattu and Tambaram |
The road leaves Madurai on the Natham road (NH 785) and joins NH 38 at Thuvarankurichi; from there it is a tolled national highway through Viralimalai, Trichy and Perambalur, NH 132 to Tindivanam and GST Road into Chennai. Since 1 October 2026 the Paranur plaza near Chengalpattu collects tolls without barriers, so vehicles pass without stopping.
Allow for slower travel through Trichy on the way out, around the Ulundurpet junctions and the Villupuram bypass, and through Chengalpattu and Tambaram on the last stretch into Chennai, which is often slow in the evening. An early-morning departure helps you avoid the busiest city traffic; for overnight travel, confirm the pickup in advance and allow necessary driver breaks.

Travel tips for your Madurai to Chennai journey
Leaving Madurai: The fastest road (read on 17 October 2026) leaves Madurai on the Natham road (NH 785) and joins the Trichy–Madurai highway (NH 38) at Thuvarankurichi. The older NH 38 road through Melur is an alternative your driver may take.
Timing: The drive was about 7 h 19 min without stops in a reading on Wednesday morning, 14 October 2026. With meal and restroom breaks, plan for 7 to 9 hours; an early start reaches GST Road before the evening traffic.
Arriving on GST Road: Chennai International Airport (Meenambakkam) and the Kilambakkam bus terminus are both on GST Road before the city centre, so a drop at either avoids most city traffic. Name the airport terminal or the terminus.
For trains: Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore are different stations a few kilometres apart. Give the one on your ticket, not only "Chennai".
